I was in active practice of Gastroenterology and GI Endoscopy from July 1978 to February 2024, with the academic appointment of Assistant Clinical Professor of GI at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. I taught and supervised GI endoscopy to the GI fellows during this time, and have published in the peer-reviewed literature. Although now retired from active practice, I see office GI patients on a volunteer basis at BVMI, a free clinic in Hackensack NJ, and remain actively licensed in NJ and NY. I continue to review medicolegal cases, and testify in states that permit me to do so, including NY and NJ. I testified on behalf of the First Responders at Ground Zero in the Zadroga and post-Zadroga litigation, providing objective assessments used in the determination of disability awards for those First Responders who suffered from gastroesophageal reflux symptoms as a result of exposure to the toxic dust cloud. I testified for the plaintiff in the landmark Massachusetts decision in Matsuyama v Birnbaum, establishing case law permitting recovery for loss of chance in a wrongful death action, where the jury found that the defendant MD's negligence deprived the plaintiff's decedent of a less than even chance of surviving gastric CA. I testified for the plaintiff in the landmark NJ case Ehrlich v Sorokin, in which the Appellate Court held that an informed consent defense may not be invoked if the plaintiff does not allege defective or lack of informed consent. I testified successfully for the plaintiffs in class actions against Boehringer Ingelheim over Xarelto causing excessive GI bleeding, and against Daiichi Sankyo over olmesartan causing a sprue-like enteropathy.I served as expert GI witness for Mikheil Saakashvili, the first democratically elected president of the Republic of Georgia, a former Soviet satellite state, who has been imprisoned on political grounds, in a motion to secure his release on humanitarian grounds.
